Water towers are used to give an increased pressure to consumers.
The towers are higher than the surrounding property so water flows by gravity
to the customers.
Other benefits of supplying customers from towers is the
constant head of water ensures pressure at the tap remains fairly constant &
because the tower is like a small reservoir it gives storage in the event of
a power cut or a pump failure.
Water towers are not so common now &
are being replaced by variable speed pumps that also ensure a constant pressure
by increasing & decreasing their speed based on the distribution mains pressure.
The picture below is a schematic showing how ater gets
into a water tower the goes on to supply customers

The next picture shows an old water tower, This one is
no longer used & has been replaced with variable speed pumps.
